Clear Water Repellents for Above Grade Masonry

Clear water repellents are penetrating or film-forming coatings formulated to protect porous substrates by reducing the penetration of liquid water. Penetrating water repellents enter the pore structure of the substrate and deposit their water repellent component on the walls of the pores. Film-formers deposit their water repellent component on the surface of the substrate.

Film-formers deposit their water repellent component on the surface of the substrate. Though sometimes called “sealers”, clear water repellents are protective treatments which do not seal treated surfaces to the transmission of water vapor. Clear water repellents permit the movement of water vapor while minimizing penetration of liquid water. Because it is virtually impossible to completely exclude water from a building under all conditions, this is an important distinction.
