Kuwait Oil Company is major player of global standing in the field of exploration production and transportation of crude oil and gas. Effluent water an essential byproduct of crude from the Gathering Centers where oil separation and processing takes place was previously disposed of in evaporation pits. Effluent water disposal plants were later constructed and commissioned in east and south Kuwait fields for treating the effluent water collected from several gathering centers and then re-injecting into the reservoir by disposal wells to maintain the reservoir pressure.

Effluent water is known for its high corrosivity due to high content of chloride. Various types of chemicals are used to control corrosion scales and microbial growth in these waters. Though during the design stage some chemicals have been selected based on lab tests proper field trials were not conducted in the early stages after commissioning.

In an effort to select proper inhibitor chemicals and also to have multiple sources of chemical suppliers a field trial plan has been devised and carried out. Based on the lab tests five chemical vendors have been selected for the field trials for various chemical formulations (Corrosion Inhibitor Scale inhibitor Oxygen scavenger and Biocide).

The paper highlights the field trial methodology and the method used to evaluate the performance of the supplied chemicals.
