The effect of carbon dioxide sulphate-reducing bacteria crude oil and a chemical treatment consisting of a corrosion inhibitor a biocide and a scale inhibitor on the general and localized corrosion of carbon steel in synthetic produced water has been investigated. Experiments were carried out in a rotating cage apparatus measuring pH planktonic bacterial count and concentrations of sulphide sulphate iron calcium and magnesium ions in the solution. After the experiment the sessile bacterial count on the carbon steel coupons was determined. Optical microscopy scanning electron microscopy mass loss and laser profilometry were used to identify deposits corrosion products bacterial cell and corrosion rate. Both general and localized pitting corrosion rates of carbon steel were found to nearly double in solutions containing 10 v% CO2 and 10 v% SRB compared to solutions containing either CO2 or SRB alone (synergistic effect). Higher CO2 concentrations killed both sessile and planktonic SRB; under these conditions the general and localized corrosion rates were determined by CO2 concentration (sweet corrosion). The crude oil evaluated has a 50% emulsion inversion point a mixed-wet wettability and is an inhibitive hydrocarbon because reduced de corrosion rate   in 30 %. Simultaneous use of a corrosion inhibitor a biocide and a scale inhibitor showed a synergistic effect that allowed maximum protection (92%) of steel to counter corrosive aggressiveness and scaling trend of synthetic produced water. Pitting corrosion and planktonic and sessile bacterial growths were eliminated and general corrosion and scale of calcium and magnesium on the coupons were minimized with this treatment.
