The subject paper presents updated inspection data from a Federal Highway Administration study of the effect of local environments on the degradation of alternative bridge coating materials. Exposure data covers up to nine years of service in several diverse environments, including sites representative of marine, industrial, and rural service environments. Paint deterioration is characterized as the result of local atmospheric parameters, time of wetness, and airborne contaminants
Due to very severe conditions at offshore, conventional coatings do not work as they require multicoats to acquire high thickness and their curing times are rather high, giving chances for the contamination by severe environment (high RH and salt) in the intermediate layers. Thus, modern coatings which can give larger thickness in just one single coat and cure in a few minutes time are required for critical applications such as splash zone which is marred by continuous dry and wet spell.

A continuing problem with coatings applied to sharp edges of a structure is the corrosion that often develops at the apex of the edge. The conventional wisdom is that the reduction of film thickness, due to coating pulling away at the edge during the curing of the coating, is the primary cause for the onset of corrosion. This theory, however, is not necessarily correct, both from a mechanistic and practical point of view.
On November 1, 2000, the National Football League named the city of Jacksonville, Florida as the site for the 2005 Super Bowl. It wasn’t long before the Florida Department of Transportation was contacted to help the city “spruce up” the Main Street Bridge for the occasion.
