The Brooklyn Bridge is a daily transportation lifeline for more than 200,000 people. It is one of the oldest and most recognizable bridges in the US and was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it opened in 1883. The Bridge has been designated both a National and New York City Landmark. Despite these triumphs, this iconic East River crossing was one of three NYCDOT bridges rated “in poor condition” after a 2007 state inspection. In response, NYCDOT embarked on a comprehensive four year, $508M project in 2010. The Rehabilitation of Approaches and Ramps and Painting of Entire Bridge, known as “Contract 6,” includes the monumental task of de-leading and repainting the structure with lead-free coating systems to prevent corrosion and improve aesthetics. (1, 2) Over 4,000,000 SF of surface area will be coated by multiple contractors with five individual paint systems, using over 100,000 gallons of paint, requiring diligent coordination.
