The Sunshine Skyway Cable Stay Bridge is the signature bridge in the State of Florida. During 2004 the decision was made to repaint the stay cables for corrosion protection and aesthetic issues. The authors participated in a coatings condition assessment, plan development for refurbishing the coating system, and project execution. In early 2009 the City of Sunnyvale in Northern California put out to bid a repaint of three five‐million gallon water tank exteriors. The tanks existing coatings qualified as leadbased paint with average concentrations of 120,000ppm or 12% lead. The three tanks were successfully abrasive blasted to an SSPC SP‐10 and recoated with a zinc/acrylic system without erection of an SSPC Guide 6 Type 1A enshrouding containment. This paper tells the story of how this was done successfully using standard but not often seen work practices, even though the project was right next door to an elementary school and multi‐family residential developments and so had to perform to the strictest levels of environmental standards.

Corrosion under Insulation (CUI) is accelerated corrosion that takes place under insulation typically used to conserve energy, help with process control, and protect workers from temperature extremes. CUI is an issue for facility owners in many industries that use heat or cold in their industrial processes, including chemical processing, refining, fertilizer manufacturing, and power generation. Insulation used in these applications is generally mechanically attached to the substrate vessel or pipeline and is typically covered with cladding. Cladding is typically made out of metal or plastic and is applied to protect the insulation from physical damage and to keep water away from the insulation and substrate.
