Applicability of 3Cr-N80 Steel and N80 Steel in Oilfield CO2 Environment

The corrosion behavior of 3Cr-N80 steel and N80 steel in simulated oil field formation water with a CO2 partial pressure of 0.23 MPa and 80 ℃ was investigated. Then the long-term CO2 corrosion resistance of 3Cr-N80 steel was studied by means of weight loss measurement and surface characterization. The results showed that severe localized corrosion of N80 steel occurred under working conditions and 3Cr-N80 steel had good localized corrosion resistance. The corrosion rate of 3Cr-N80 steel decreased exponentially with time. It decreased sharply with the increasing of corrosion time initially and then decreased slowly to a stable stage. Cr enriched in corrosion product film and Cr content in the corrosion product film was 8 times more than the Cr content in the matrix. The high Cr(OH)3 content improves the protection performance of the scales and the corrosion resistance of 3Cr-N80 steel. As a result the corrosion morphology changes and the corrosion rate decrease. FeCO3 and Cr(OH)3 co-deposited films have a critical effect on the CO2 corrosion resistance of 3Cr-N80 steel.
