The Fernando Espinosa Bridge is one of the largest steel bridges in Mexico with a span of approximately 206 m and 125 m high. It is located in the western state of Jalisco and is of particular importance since it an strategic way linking the city of Guadalajara (one of the largest and important cities in Mexico) with Mexico City. For a recent rehabilitation project the services of a consulting company were hired to evaluate the conditions of the coating system that had been applied since the 1990’s and determine the new coating system in order to prolong the life of the steel structure. This evaluation involved a lead testing visual inspection dry film thickness measurements and the determination of the adhesion of the original coating system by the pull-off test. Additionally the evaluation involved a system of patch tests in order to do an on-site evaluation of ten (10) different coating systems and from five (05) different coating manufacturers which were also tested by the pull-off adhesion test method. The use of technologies of image analysis is used commonly in metallographic studies geographic zone studies establishment of the use of the soil distribution of species of animals and vegetation and projections of human growth among other. However we were able to extrapolate the spatial analysis for the quantification of the results of the pull-off adhesion tests of the coatings involved in the Fernando Espinosa Bridge project. For the evaluation of the adhesion tests software for the analysis of the digital images was used in order to help identify the results of the test and the location of the failure; also this analysis was helpful to establish a very precise statistical method that helped quantify the percentage of failure observed after each adhesion test. This method of digital analysis offers exact magnitudes of adhesion and helps establish the general tendencies on the surface of the element evaluated. This work details the evaluation performed on the bridge structure and the implementation of the digital image analysis to help quantify the results of the pull-off adhesion tests.
