Corrosion inhibition of carbon steel in mixtures of water and monoethylene glycol saturated with H2S and CO2 has been studied using research formulations with different active inhibitor compounds.  Experiments have been carried out in glass cells at ambient total pressure and various temperatures and ionic strength. While satisfactory inhibition of general and weight loss corrosion was possible to achieve with all the inhibitors tested the findings demonstrate the challenges of mitigating pitting and other types of localized corrosion attacks in this enviroment. The addition of glycol to the H2S/CO2/H2O system was found to further complicate testing of corrosion inhibitors as the steel coupons appeared to become more susceptible to localized edge and crevice attacks on areas in vicinity of the coupons holders. The test methodology and the chemical aspects of inhibitor treatment in sour glycolic environments are discussed on the basis of these and other relevant findings.
