Appraised Dry Film Thickness (ADFT) is a modern statistical approach regarding DFT interpretation onto any steel structure regardless its size and complexity. The concept has been firstly presented on the EUROCORR 2010 Conference in Moscow. ADFT is a useful tool that met interest and has been adopted by Petrobras as alternative acceptance criteria to rule 80/20 and 90/10 (the former explained in ISO 19840) and implemented recently (February 2011) in painting specifications due its advantages over formerly mentioned rules (easy visualization of the amount of paint applied durability forecast and so on). In favour of cooperation with Petrobras the ADFT concept has been improved. The concept is based on Gaussian approximation of the DFT measurements' batch. Two different values can be thus calculated from mean and standard deviation: ADFT or ADFT90. The former corresponds to rule 80/20 whilst the later to rule 90/10. Both formulas are very simple:ADFT= x – 0.84·? and ADFT90 = x – 1.28·? when x ? mean average DFT and standard deviation respectively. In order to check the acceptance of painting job one has to compare ADFT (or ADFT90) value to Normal Dry Film Thickness.
