Some piping systems used in oil production systems are galvanically coupled such as a portion of steel pipe internally coated with inconel alloy cladding or a steel pipe metallically jointed to a section of titanium pipe. With conductive electrolyte flowing inside the piping corrosion of the steel pipe can be enhanced by its coupling to a more noble metallic surface. The corrosion of the steel pipe and the distribution of current flowing in the piping in the longitudinal direction can be predicted through mathematical modeling using polarization curves of the two metals as inputs. A simple analytical method assisted with only Excel spreadsheet was found to be sufficient for making this prediction; no numerical computations are needed. This paper is aimed at presenting this simple method and showcasing the method with example results.
