A plant health assessment was conducted for one of Saudi Aramco’s Gas Oil Separation Plants (GOSP). The assessment’s primary objective was to provide an action plan to address the likelihood of design and operational concerns identify potential areas of improvements and thus provide recommendations of the remedial actions necessary to maintain safe and reliable operations over the facility’s lifespan. The assessment covered different disciplines with an integrated and holistic approach. Theses disciplines included Materials and Corrosion Control Inspection Mechanical Process Instrumentation and Rotating Equipment. The paper will discuss the major findings and recommendations of this assessment pertaining to materials corrosion control and Inspection.
Frequent corrosion problems were found at Degassing Vessel and Low Pressure Production Trap (LPPT) gas outlet piping due to water carry over from these vessels. In addition crude oil lines experienced low flow velocities which resulted in water separation in these lines and severe corrosion at the bottom of the lines. The effect of increasing trend of water cut on the process equipment and corrosion control was considered and evaluated. Corrosion management strategy was developed covering the mitigation measures monitoring and inspection requirements upon the assessment findings. The assessment highlighted several weaknesses and area of improvements in the inspection programs that will improve and help the GOSP’S corrosion control strategy.
