Top-of-the-line corrosion (TLC) in wet gas subsea production or gathering lines are often prevented using corrosion resistant alloys or batch corrosion inhibition programs. Both options are expensive or marginally effective. Using a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) based laboratory methodology we have developed a new effective TLC corrosion inhibitor. The product has a good environmental profile is compatible with ethylene glycol and has excellent compatibility with various materials. The paper describes laboratory QCM test results of various volatile amines i.e. volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCI) against the TLC and its mitigation under field simulated conditions. Additionally standard laboratory corrosion test results together with the toxicity biodegradation and compatibility of the product with metals plastics and elastomers are reported. The new TLC corrosion inhibitor can be injected continuously as a replacement to the batch chemical treatment program and continuous volatile amine corrosion inhibitor products. The product will enable gas producers to mitigate the impact of the TLC on pipeline integrity.
