The interest in the United States in the use of coupons for evaluating the effectiveness of a cathodic protection system has been increasing for the past five years. In addition, several studies have been performed that examined the use of off-potential measurements for evaluating the effectiveness of the CP system. These studies have shown several conditions for which conventional off-potential measurements on pipelines are either inaccurate or difficult to apply. The most notable of these conditions are areas of stray current interference or areas in which all of the CP current can not be interrupted. Coupons can be used to give significant information on the level of protection supplied by a CP system to an operating pipeline. Data which is easily collected from the coupons include an off-potential of the coupon, depolarization behavior of the coupon, and the current pickup on the coupon. This study presents data developed at three field sites on operating pipelines and at a test site where 300 (90 m) of 24” (601 mm) diameter pipe is buried and instrumented. Keywords: coupons, cathodic protection, pipelines, corrosion monitoring, cathodic polarization, corrosion, offpotential, current
