Experience has shown the importance of human behavior in the performance of engineering systems. In the analysis of corrosion failures, due attention should be given to underlying human factors, rather than to corrosion mechanisms alone. The present military operating environment demands doing more corrosion control with shrinking resources. Any efforts directed at making corrosion control easier for operating personnel are thus highly relevant. In attempting to improve corrosion ergonomics, interactions among several human sub-factors such as design, procurement, manufacturers, engineers and users need to be considered. Personal computing technology and the Internet provide new opportunities in solving corrosion problems more effkiently. Initial efforts have been directed at describing and quantifying the impact of human behavior on the performance of engineering systems.
