The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) has begun using internal concrete lining for corrosion protection of steel pipelines used to transport brine. A study is underway to determine the suitability of electrochemical corrosion monitoring of concrete lined pipe. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and linear polarization (LP) have been made over a three year period. Specially designed probes were installed in a brine service header during construction to permit electrochemical corrosion rate measurements to be made. Corrosion rates have been determined and results from the two types of measurements have been compared. Results show that there is fair agreement between the corrosion rates determined using the two methods. This study has shown that EIS can be successfully conducted in the field to study corrosion rates and mechanisms. However, LP may more suitable for monitoring purposes due to the simplicity of the technique and the portability of the instrumentation.
