The results of an extensive investigation on the savings/risk benefits for using electric resistance welded (ERW) tubular products as replacements for similar seamless products historically used by a major oil company are described in this paper. A test program to evaluate ERW products from several steel mills for serviceability in sweet production environments is described. Results from extended flowloop and short-term screening tests to detect accelerated weld zone (grooving) corrosion are given. Metallurgical testing procedures and test results are also summarized. Cost savings of over $2 million per year were estimated as possible by substituting ERW tubing, casing and line pipe for similar seamless products in selected hydrocarbon production environments. Keywords: electric resistance welded (ERW) pipe, seamless pipe, accelerated weld zone attack, grooving corrosion, carbon dioxide corrosion, oxygen corrosion, flowloop tests, metallurgical tests
