Aircraft corrosion surveillance is an important topic in view of the aging aircraft “problem” facing military and commercial fleets. Aircraft corrosion surveillance can provide, in conjunction with other methodologies, information that is essential for managing aircraft corrosion control programmed. Initial steps have been taken in several countries to introduce corrosion surveillance to aircraft corrosion control programmed. This paper describes the principle of corrosion surveillance and some of its initial applications in the aircraft industry. Following a brief discussion of atmospheric corrosion, three main areas of application of aircraft corrosion surveillance are described together with the available surveillance technology. The paper also describes an aircraft corrosion strategy for the Canadian Forces in other countries.
