CP (cathodic protection) is the primary technique used for corrosion control on the majority of offshore steel structures below the splash zone. Because offshore platforms are often kept in service far beyond their original design life, refurbishment of the CP system is required when adequate protection can no longer be maintained. This paper presents one company’s experiences with various offshore platform CP retrofit designs. Case histories from installations which utilized conventional diver-placed sacrificial anodes, suspended sacrificial anodes, and fixed impressed current anodes are covered.
