Data generated from the reinspection of some six hundred deaerators are examined. They show that not all vessels that were cracked during the initial inspection were cracked in subsequent inspections. The repair technique influences the propensih; for recracking. In addition, it appears that pitting is a more serious problem in reinspection situations than it was during the initial examinations and may well lead to cracking where none existed before. A particularly aggressive; form of pitting was identified in a number of units which required extensive, and often difficult. repairs.
