Application of thermal spray coatings on gate valve components used in the oilfield industry has been common for several years.

Coatings that are selected for gate and seat applications must meet stringent service requirements to provide reliable gas-tight metal-to-metal sealing. High Velocity Oxy-Fuel (HVOF), Detonation gun (D-gun) coating processes provide enhancements to surface properties by improving wear and corrosion resistance as well ensuring effective sealing between functional surfaces.

This paper reviews the applicable coating materials, presents several testing methods, and provides the key properties of such coatings.
