This paper highlights an ongoing PHMSA-sponsored research project directed toward
developing an External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) methodology for segments of
pipelines that are cased in metallic casings below ground. The paper addresses cased pipe
assessment technologies, results of research and testing for applying ECDA methodologies to
cased pipe, and a preliminary Cased Pipe ECDA methodology. This ongoing 2-year research
project is one part of a three part project to identify enhancements for the ECDA process. The
other two parts of the project are enhancing severity ranking for ECDA Indirect Inspection
indications and enhancing measurement of pipe-to-soil potentials on pipe under pavement.
Completion of this project is scheduled for May 2010.
