The Baram Delta operation (BDO), offshore Sarawak, Malaysia has been producing oil and gas since the late 1960s. No separation of produced water takes place offshore with all produced fluids being transported to the Miri Crude Oil Terminal for processing. Many of the crude oil pipelines operate with more than 40% water and varying levels of microbial activity are present in the system. The objectives of this study were to relate the level of microbial activity to the risk of microbially influenced corrosion and to identify potential sources for the microbial contamination in the system. A customized prediction model was developed to assess the potential impact of the different environmental factors that were likely to influence microbial activity.
