The role of acetic acid on the integrity of the protective iron carbonate layer (FeCO3) formed on X-65 mild steel in carbon dioxide corrosion has been investigated. Three sets of experiments were conducted, by varying the acetic acid concentration, flow velocity and pH. It was found that the presence of acetic acid may lead to the damage of the iron carbonate layer and a temporary increase in the corrosion rate. However, the final corrosion rate did not seem to be affected as much.
