The presentation discusses how alloy corrosion measured in laboratory testing can be related to
industrial conditions, which induce sulfidation/oxidation. Formation of both sulfide and oxide
corrosion products indicates that sulfidation/oxidation is the prevailing corrosion mechanism. We’ll
review the goals of laboratory testing and show how industrial environments rich in H2-H2S-H2O
gases can be simulated in laboratory tests using CO-COS-CO2 gases. The important variables,
which determine the corrosivity of the exposure conditions, are reviewed and a method, which uses
CO-COS-CO2 gases to simulate corrosion induced by H2-H2S-H2O gases, will be demonstrated.
CO-COS-CO2 and H2-H2S-H2O gases can be used to determine the PO2 and PS2 values of a
sulfidizing/oxidizing corrosive environment, in terms of the rates of reactions and the predominances
of the alloy corrosion products. In both gases, the combination of the PO2 and PS2 values
determine the stabilities of sulfide and oxide corrosion products.
