Several electrochemical techniques have been established and are used in practice in order to determine the corrosion rate of steel in concrete. For this research, different electrochemical techniques were used in a laboratory study in order to monitor the corrosion activity and measure the corrosion rate of steel in concrete containing chloride ions. The techniques used were measurement of open-circuit potential, Tafel plot, polarization resistance and AC impedance. The effect of concrete quality, cover depth thickness, cracking in concrete, and polypropylene fibers was studied. The corrosion current densities determined using the polarization resistance technique show good agreement to the values obtained using the Tafel plot technique for the specimens tested. The Tafel plot constants were also determined. Certain differences in trends and values are discussed and compared to values obtained from the technical literature
