A 62-year old concrete pier reinforced with type 304 stainless steel bars was inspected for the third time in five years. As the pier approaches the end of its expected service life it is more interesting to decipher the secrets of its good performance in order to apply them to new concrete structures under marine environment. In this occasion, emphasis was made in the chloride analysis as a function of variables such as height above tides, orientation, and the environment. From a previous investigation in laboratory concrete specimens, some of these variables have been quantified after several years of exposure to the same environment. Results showed that chloride concentration is the highest when the distance above high tide is the smallest and in the south and west faces. Also, it was observed a higher chloride concentration in the inner continuously wet zones compared with the external zones.
