The deck of an offshore installation, i.e. fixed platform or FPSO, is one of the critical areas for
corrosion protection. Not only are the deck areas subjected to continuous impact and abrasion, they
are also required to be sea water resistant and oil resistant.
Offshore structures have differing requirements for decks, be it ‘laydown’ areas or general nonslip
for safety requirements on walkways.
Therefore, testing of the various ‘heavy duty’ thick film and ‘light duty’ think film deck systems is
very important and often time consuming. This paper details the recent work carried out to assess the
suitability of coatings for use in offshore deck areas. This paper details the testing and results of an
extensive evaluation of various candidate formulations based upon Hydrocarbon Modified Epoxies,
Pure Epoxies, Glass Flake Epoxies and UHB Epoxies, together with coarse (1.8mm – 3.0mm) and fine
(0.5mm – 1.8mm) aggregates. The test methods utilized show the differences between heavy duty and
light duty systems with regard to impact strength and cyclic corrosion.
