Fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE) resins were developed in the early 1980’s. The primary
application for coatings made with these resins has been in architectural markets, where the gloss and
color retention offered by the resins are the main properties of interest. However, FEVE coatings also
offer excellent corrosion resistance, especially in marine environments, which not only have high levels
of UV radiation, but also high levels of corrosives. This paper will discuss the chemistry and physical
characteristics of FEVE resins, including data on weatherability. A brief review of FEVE resin product
types will be given. Both laboratory and offshore corrosion test results on fluorourethane coatings based
on FEVE resins will be presented. Finally, a number of specific case studies and projects on offshore
structures will be discussed.
