It is well known in the protective coatings industry that the surface profile of the substrate can
influence the performance of high build coatings which are used extensively in corrosive environments.
It is common practice to specify an angular blast profile having an average peak height of between 40-
75 microns using chilled iron grit as the blast media. Peak height is not the only parameter which
influences performance as the number of peaks per unit length can also affect coating performance.
Both peak height and peak count can be varied with abrasive selection and their influence on coating
performance can be evaluated.
The following study will look into the influence of blasting media on the resulting surface profile,
and evaluate the effect these parameters have on coating performance.
Coating performance will be assessed using internationally recognized offshore coating test
standards such as NACE TM0404, ISO 20340, ASTM B117 and ASTM D5894.
