During the installation of a directionally drilled river crossing, the coating is subject to high soil stress and potential coating damage. Tough, flexible coatings are needed to minimize coating damage during installation. Dual powder fusion bond epoxy (FBE) coatings met these rigorous demands. Dual powder FBE coatings are easily applied in most coating facilities setup for FBE. Two layers dual powder systems are applied consecutively usually in the same electrostatic spray gun chamber. Surface preparation, pre-coating inspection, and post-coating inspection are similar to standard FBE coating. Field weld joint coatings were applied using either liquid epoxies or a modified dual powder fusion bond epoxy coating application. Coating damage caused by dragging the piping across the ice was minimal.
