Pipelines, valves, and related equipment that operate at elevated temperatures are subject to atmospheric and under insulation corrosion. Traditional systems to protect these substrates have typically been those applied at ambient temperature, and following explicit surface preparation steps, i.e. degreasing to remove contamination, grit blasting for the required profile, etc. Recent technology has allowed for a successful breakthrough in the coating's world. Single-component, heat-activated systems, which are ideally applied to equipment in service, represent a novel introduction and become part of today's arsenal in the battle against corrosion damage. Ease-of-application, fast cure, in-service applications, and minimal, if any at all, surface preparation are all benefits of this revolutionary new system. Corrosion losses can be mitigated with this technology.

In ship's ballast tanks, most of coating failures (and corrosion attacks) were observed on sharp steel edges, welds seams and weld spatters. One solution is to employ high solid coating material with less tendency to flow away from edges. In this study, two coatings  are selected and evaluated in terms of their edge retention ability.

A cyclic salt-fog test was used to characterize the corrosion control of various aluminum foil coatings on rusted steel. In the maintenance of minimally prepared steel in a marine atmosphere, a properly designed coating system, containing an aluminum foil layer, would be expected to be significantly more durable than a traditional liquid applied coating.
