Many structures are difficult to paint. Transmission towers, which are a tall array of open lattice steel, are such an example. The substrate is usually galvanized steel with some surface rust. Traditionally, two coat systems, using a leaded corrosion resistant primer with a topcoat, have been used. The towers are painted by applicators climbing the tower. Scaffolding is not used. This paper will discuss a one-coat, high-build, lead-free, low VOC, self-priming coating that provides long term corrosion protection, low application costs, requires minimal surface preparation, and is easy maintain. The system has been in use for over 50 years, with little modification. The performance of the system and the application of this coating to other structures will be discussed.
