There have been refinery corrosion and fouling problems since the first refineries were constructed. When corrosion problems are detected, it has been quite common to consider metallurgical upgrades or add corrosion inhibitors to help protect against the corrosion. In the last 30 years, there have been over 40 eases of downstream catalyst degradation and fouling problems due to treating the symptoms
upstream without regard to identifying the problem. This paper will address one example and case history.
