Expandable tubulars is an emerging tubular technology that has been implemented successfully in a number of applications. In-situ expansion of this type of tubular material allows for preservation of borehole size while reducing pipe tapering, which can be especially useful in deep wells. Expandable tubulars can also be used to repair wells with damaged completions. When these tubulars expand, yielding and plastic deformation of the pipe occurs. The residual stresses from the cold working of the expanded tubulars could affect the corrosion characteristics of the tubing in the presence of different oilfield fluids. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of water, API brine (under either a nitrogen, CO2 or a CO2/H2S atmosphere), and inhibited 15% HC1. General corrosion of these fluids was determined on expanded and unexpanded LSX-80 casing material at 100 ° (38°C) and 300°F (149°C) with linear polarization resistance measurements.
