The use of thermoplastic liners has met with mixed results in applications where the fluid stream comprises hydrocarbons and/or gases. Such systems have often failed prematurely due to liner collapse. Further, liners have hindered the use of common methods used to monitor system integrity. This report describes the preliminary qualification of a liner system designed to overcome these deficiencies. The concept liner is grooved, essentially longitudinally, along its exterior surface to create a significant and continuous annulus when it is installed within the host pipe. The annulus provided by the liner geometry then functions as a conduit, facilitating reduction of residual gas pressure which is the primary contributor to liner collapse. Also, the annulus can be used to convey operational information, including systems integrity data along the length of the line. Tests performed on a representative sample under simulated field conditions have demonstrated the practicality of the grooved liner concept and indicated its potential suitability for long-term service. Keywords: corrosion protection, HDPE, liner, model, pipeline, swelling, collapse, leak detection
