As chemical processes become more aggressive in terms of temperatures and pressures, higher cost, more exotic alloys like Zr 705 are being used. Although zirconium alloys have seen some use since the early 1970's, they are still somewhat of a mystery and a concern to many in the chemical process industries (CPI) who use them. At Corrosion 95, a paper was presented which addressed the concern of delayed hydride cracking of Zr 705. This paper will provide an update on that work and present a new patented discovery for significantly improving the fracture toughness properties of this alloy.
