Application of 6Mo super austenitic stainless steel (UNS No. S31254) has increased in oil and gas plants and refineries to reduce the corrosion associated with chlorides.In recent years there have been two cases of cracking in hot-formed flanges and cold-formed fittings made of S31254 and it was thought that all the cracking occurred during the forming processes. Though some information on the workability of S31254 is currently available further information is needed to establish suitable forming?processes especially for processes with high strain rates.This paper firstly presents cases of cracking during the forming processes for hot-formed flanges and cold-formed fittings. Then the results of investigations into?hot and cold workability of several high PREN alloys including S31254 are presented. Also some recommendations to reduce the risk of cracking during forming processes are offered.
