Pitting corrosion has been the predominant cause of pipeline leaks in various environments. Different corrosion mechanisms can drive the corrosion attack to pitting and can cause failure anywhere within a few weeks to months or years of service. It is therefore crucial to provide tools to assess pitting corrosion in an accurate and reproducible fashion in order to prevent failures before they occur. This paper focuses on the use of white light profilometry to assess pitting corrosion in CO2/H2S containing environments. Laboratory and field case studies will illustrate the use of surface metrology to evaluate the performance of corrosion inhibitors and mitigate internal corrosion in pipelines. The use of profilometry not only allows the best product for a new application to be selected but can also help monitor any changes in performance of an incumbent corrosion inhibitor within an existing operation.
