It is generally known that the surface state influences the sensitivity of a material to metal dusting. In this study the different production states of alloy 602 CA are compared as there are plate deeply ground and 1200 grid ground strip as delivered and 1200 grid ground and longitudinally welded tubes as delivered and 1200 grid ground. All samples were exposed for 7750h at 600°C in a 37% CO 7% CO2 46% H2 9% H2O atmosphere Ptot=20bar (ac: Boudouard / CO-reduction / water-Gas-Shift: 452/163/253). A deeply ground surface performs better than a surface with 1200 grid ground. Alloy 602 CA with a 1200 grid performs better than 602 CA bright annealed slightly brushed and pickled all samples having a grain size of 40 µm. The longitudinal welded tube with 1200 grid ground and as delivered performs similar both with a grain size of 46 to 96µm. Alloy 602 CA with a grain size of 40µm performs much better than alloy 602 CA with 46 to 96µm or even with 85µm all samples 1200 grid ground. This proves the effect of the grain size because of chromium diffusion along grain boundaries is much faster than diffusion through the bulk of the grains.
