Embarking on an exploration of intriguing coating failures, where sophisticated analytical techniques are used to dig deep within the coating, fascinating and unexpected discoveries can sometimes occur. In some instances, akin to an archaeological dig where great excitement and trepidation may be aroused at the discovery of a mummy, the forensic evaluation of coating failures can sometimes lead to a "chemical mummy" and a curse for those held responsible for its presence. In other instances, the mummy is easily recognized as a structure where the state of its wrappings provide an interesting clue as to what lies beneath as the wrappings are unwound. Using select case histories that highlight the ingenious and sleuthful approach of investigators, this paper presents the unearthing of peculiar happenings in the coating’s world where "The Curse of the Mummy" is, after the fact, all too apparent.
The U.S. Navy has implemented the use of Ultra High Solids (UHS) coatings as tank linings over the past decade. This paper reviews the evolution to UHS coatings, their performance benefits, and the environmental impact of using these materials. The next generation of UHS coatings incorporating rapid cure properties and optically active fluorescent pigments will also be explored.

Every year millions of dollars are spent litigating the responsibility issues associated with the repair or replacement of coated products that have prematurely lost their decorative or protective value due to improper coating specification or application. Many of these failures could have been avoided if the proper finishing materials and methods were specified, followed, certified and documented.
Industrial and marine protective coating systems are most commonly applied without incident and perform as expected over their anticipated service life. However, occasionally, a coating system will fail prematurely, for unexpected reasons, and with expensive consequences. This paper addresses those unexpected failures and provides reasons and remedies for such occurrences.
