Organic modified polysiloxanes are generally recognized as the newest generic class of high-performance protective coating. They have gained commercial acceptance over the last ten years and are now widely used in new construction, heavy duty OEM, marine and industrial maintenance painting. This paper provides an overview of the technology, describes the available types of polysiloxane modified organic coatings and their properties and briefly discusses some recent advances in the field.

A new era of natural gas exploration is spreading across the continental United States and Canada. Through a technique called hydraulic fracturing (fracking), huge deposits of oil shale, like the Marcellus and Utica deposits that extend from the Appalachians and into Canada, are now producing enough gas to meet North America’s needs for the next 14 years. The boom in gas exploration has opened up new markets for pipeline and joint coating materials to provide corrosion protection.
Canada’s existing natural gas pipeline network is being considered to help store and distribute high pressure hydrogen, when blended with natural gas, to support transition to the hydrogen economy. The importance of this topic to Canada is well document in the Federal Government’s call to action “Hydrogen Strategy for Canada”, which includes benefits such as: (i) positioning Canada to become a worlding-leading supplier of hydrogen technologies, (ii) employing hydrogen as a key enabler to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, and (iii) generating more than 350,000 high paying jobs, including unique opportunities for indigenous communities and businesses.
