The South Valley Sewer District, located outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, experienced severe degradation of the concrete substrate the Membrane Basins at the Jordan Basin WRF. The Bowen Collins & Associates designed facility initially opened for service in July of 2012. By 2017 the facility was showing significant effects of concrete deterioration from chemical attack, caused by citric acid and sodium hypochlorite used as a part of the cleaning procedures in the membrane basins.

Four separate concrete cooling towers at a coal fired electrical generation plant exhibited reinforcing steel corrosion causing concrete deterioration. The presentation will cover investigation of the corrosion sources, determination of the corrosion control solutions, implementation of the repair construction, and review of the corrosion measurements taken to prove effectiveness of the solution.
Reinforced concrete structures are subject to many types of deterioration. Many of these are visible; however, one that is not is the crevice corrosion that occurs internally at the reinforcing bars. To detect, mitigate and delay this type of insidious corrosion, a form of cathodic protection in the form of thermal sprayed coatings will be discussed. To implement this as a corrective action as well as a preventive action is the theme of this paper.
Attendees will be provided an overview and understanding of the problems associated with concrete deterioration in water and wastewater treatment facilities. Information regarding surface preparation, material selection and application methods will be presented.
This case study shows how the City of Virginia Beach addressed concrete tank foundation deterioration and steps taken to reduce future deterioration, including moisture control, impact of Alkali Silica Reaction, concrete analysis and proper surface preparation, coatings applications and inspection.
