In early 2009 the City of Sunnyvale in Northern California put out to bid a repaint of three five‐million gallon water tank exteriors. The tanks existing coatings qualified as leadbased paint with average concentrations of 120,000ppm or 12% lead. The three tanks were successfully abrasive blasted to an SSPC SP‐10 and recoated with a zinc/acrylic system without erection of an SSPC Guide 6 Type 1A enshrouding containment. This paper tells the story of how this was done successfully using standard but not often seen work practices, even though the project was right next door to an elementary school and multi‐family residential developments and so had to perform to the strictest levels of environmental standards.

A greener approach will create need for new products and specifications. Increased global trade will put further pressure on producer to serve similar qualities to all countries
This paper considers the environmental and financial impact of various antifouling coatings for ships hulls. To do this comparison an eco-efficiency analysis was conducted comparing three different fouling control systems which offer the same customer benefit of a clean underwater hull. The results clearly demonstrated that fluoropolymer foul release technology can offer this benefit in the most eco efficient way having lower impacts on both the environment and on the economics of using that technology.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a 20-40% increased risk of certain types of cancer, lung cancer in particular, for those who come into regular contact with, or work with paint. This paper will give a highlight on the challenges that are facing the adoption of green paints in a variety of applications and the current status for that including paint formulations, supply chain, and community education.
Today’s coating formulations have and are continuing to evolve in chemistry and composition in response to environmental regulations as well as raw material availability, and social expectations. The performance expectations for coatings have, if anything increased rather than decreased.
Few things in life improve quality, decrease costs and reduce the environmental impact. With the proper technology, using steel grit to prepare steel structures for coating can accomplish this.
