Presented here is a certified industrial compostable vapor phase corrosion inhibitor film that meets EN 13432/ASTM D6400 standards for commercial compostability. It passes NACE VIA (Vapor Inhibiting Ability) requirements and provides the same corrosion protection as conventional inhibitor film. But unlike conventional film going to a landfill or, worse, becoming ocean debris, this compostable film will biodegrade in an industrial compost site and go back to soil components without posing an ecotoxicity threat to plant growth. High-level radioactive waste generated during reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel at Hanford has been stored in several single- and 27 double shell tanks (DSTs). Each DST consists of a primary shell (inner) surrounded by secondary (outer) liner. The secondary liner rests on a concrete foundation. Rainwater may seep in and accumulate in the drain slots and may corrode the exterior of the secondary liner. Evidence of wall thinning has been detected via ultrasonic inspections of the annulus floor between the primary and secondary tank shells. Since the inspection is confined to this region, there is a concern that corrosion is widespread on the underside of the bottom plate.

Effectiveness of Vapor Corrosion Inhibitors under Elevated Chloride Conditions for Aboveground Storage Tank Application

The sand quality used to construct the tank pad is an important contributing factor to the rate of corrosion that occurs on the soil-side of the aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) floor plates. Clean sand that meets specific criteria provides the first line of defense for mitigation of tank floor corrosion. However, it has been observed that the sand quality used for some existing tanks differ greatly from the specifications provided in the API 651 standard; this could be partially due to initial sand quality not meeting the specification, and partially due to the environmental effects over time. For example, rain-water intrusion could lead to higher than the specified contents of corrosive species such as chloride. Tank operators are increasingly using vapor corrosion inhibitors (VCIs) either as a stand alone or in combination with cathodic protection (CP) for ASTs to mitigate soil-side corrosion. VCIs are delivered either through-the-floor or injected through the ports in the ring wall. Experimental studies were conducted to evaluate VCIs’ performance at elevated chloride concentrations and to study the effectiveness of the delivery methods under extreme chloride conditions. The experimental work found that VCI performance is robust and not compromised due to high chloride levels, such as 300 ppm or more. The work also showed that the through-the-floor VCI delivery method is more beneficial compared to the through-the-sand-pad method when tank pad corrosivity is elevated.

High-Temperature-Stable Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor for CUI

Corrosion under insulation (CUI) happens due to moisture egress and thermal cycling. Chemical inhibitors can be a relatively low-cost method to mitigate CUI. Inhibitors for CUI that are stable at temperatures below 175°C exist. However, many pipes have thermal cycling at temperatures higher than 175°C. When such high-temperature-operating pipes undergo idling and then experience high temperature operation again, the CUI would be more pronounced because higher temperatures entail higher corrosion rates. It would require inhibitors that are both stable at high temperatures and possess vapor phase inhibition. Presented here is a novel vapor phase corrosion inhibitor that is stable up to 662°F (350°C). The thermal stability, diffusion, and the protection of carbon steel (C1018) against chloride-containing liquid by its vapor deposit will be discussed. This inhibitor is nonflammable. It is USDA-certified biobased, and biodegradable.
