Oil and gas production consider the nature of the reservoir and the complexity of the forming layers as a governing factor. One of the major challenges that are faced in the oil and gas upstream industry is the complexity of the reservoir in which the production requires enhanced recovery process. Polymer injection is one of the methods that is used widely to enhance the production and increase it accordingly. However, after the polymer preparation and mixing process, a system of flowlines and pipelines is utilized to carry over the final polymer product to the injection wells. This requires a comprehensive study of the material selection options for the pipelines and flowlines that are considered based on their performance, low maintenance requirement, and cost effectiveness. This paper focuses on the testing and qualification of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) internal lined carbon steel that is considered as one of the material selection options for polymer transfer. Further, material selection options are discussed along with the testing and qualification requirements. Compatibility of the high concentrated polymer liquid with HDPE material was tested to design HDPE liner inside CS pipes to transport and inject the polymer into the wells.

CUI (Corrosion under insulation) refers to localized corrosion under thermal insulations, which pose integrity risks to the hydrocarbon facilities. 1 CUI is reportedly a driver behind 40-60% of failures in the facility piping. Smaller-sized piping (i.e., diameter < 4”) are even more prone to CUI, whereas reportedly 81% of failures in small-sized piping are due to CUI. 2 CUI-related failures and associated efforts comprise 10% of a facility’s maintenance budget. Management of CUI risks has always been challenging as it involves maneuvering numerous governing factors. The key driving factor behind CUI is the aerated moisture that comes from soaked thermal insulations.

Medium voltage (MV) cables, which typically operate in the range of 2 kV to 35 kV, are commonly used in nuclear power plants (NPPs) throughout the world. These cables support the safety and wellbeing of NPPs by providing supplementary power for safety systems to continue operating during emergency events such as natural disasters or human-induced outages. This allows for uninterrupted reactor operations for a short period of time until the primary safety systems can be brought back online. Given their critical importance to the operation of NPPs, MV cables are often installed in locations such as underground concrete ducts or electrical conduits that limit cable exposure to environmental stressors such as moisture and temperature. Despite the fact that these cables are not operating continuously given the overall rarity of NPP emergency events, they must still satisfy reliability and lifetime performance requirements of cables used in primary NPP operations.

The Virtual Corrosion Engineer (VCE)(1) platform in Shell uses data from online monitoring of industrial plant process conditions as the input to the best available models for the damage mechanisms applicable to the equipment or components of interest. The primary output is then the corrosion rate or susceptibility to failure, displayed on a continuously updated dashboard in real time. However, for furnaces or heat exchangers with hundreds or thousands of tubes, most components of the input data are properly considered as distributions rather than single point value estimates, and hence the remnant life of the tubes is also best represented as a distribution. This paper shows how Monte-Carlo simulation techniques can be used to address this problem and improve the quality of decision making, using practical examples related to creep damage of furnace tubes in service.
