Coal tar enamel provides an extremely long service life, under the right conditions. The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) has observed more than 80 years of corrosion protection at facilities such as Hoover Dam. The coal tar enamel linings in penstocks and outlet works that are buried, encased, or in tunnels maintain excellent condition with minor damage. However, when temperature fluctuates between hot and cold, the enamel is stressed and develops alligator cracking.

The intent of this presentation is to outline a procedure that if followed Polymer Linings will protect the customer’s assets for many years. The perception is that Polymer Linings only last for 6-8 years then they have to be totally removed. This presentation will show if proper procedures are followed Polymer Linings that have been in service for many tears do not necessarily have to be totally removed.
Corrosion of metallic pipelines is a significant source of failures to drinking water utilities. Cathodic Protection has been used for buried metallic pipelines for decades but not widely used in the water industry. Preliminary findings of the on-going Water Research Foundation project.
Common methods of maintenance painting have either involved complete removal of existing paint (e.g., SSPC-SP 10, Near White Blast Cleaning) or highly localized preparation of corroding areas using power or hand tools (e.g., SSPC-SP 2 or SSPC-SP 3). Sometimes projects may be designed to an intermediate level where the intent is to reduce the surface preparation level of effort by allowing “good” coatings to remain. In these cases, abrasive blasting or ultra-high pressure water jetting may be used to prepare the entire surface, but well adhered aged coating is allowed to remain.
