PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride)-based coatings are recognized by architects as a premium weatherable coating technology. They provide years of color and gloss retention along with corrosion protection. However, PVDF based coatings have been limited to factory-applied finishes on metal since the coatings require high-temperature processing.
Pigment and additive choices are crucial in getting good results when adapting fluoropolymer formulations for specific application requirements. This presentation will explore some specific case studies showing how paint formulation principles were applied to achieve superior coating performance for targeted substrates and application conditions.
Typical service lifetimes for protective coating systems range from 10-50 years, depending on how extreme the service environment is, as well as on all the details of substrate preparation, coating composition, and coating application.4 While the primary consideration for specifiers of protective coating systems is the service life related to corrosion protection, there is often also a requirement of durability of decorative properties, e.g. color and gloss. This is true not only for monumental steel structures, but also for instance for industrial and offshore structures where “safety colors” are used. This segment therefore has many similarities to the “architectural coatings” segment (coatings for monumental buildings), where the substrates may be different, but where a multi-layer system approach is still used, and owners expect the durability of both the protective and decorative functions.
Well-formulated fluorocarbon paints can last for decades, but when repair is needed or a color change is desired, it can sometimes be a challenge to choose the right coating system to use on top of the fluorocarbon. This presentation will discuss new VOC-compliant options that have become available which not only stick to fluorocarbon paints, but also offer a quantum improvement in color fade resistance.
Several coating systems and designs were chosen to protect a concrete chamber with side walls coated with a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) material. When polyurea was identified as the coating to be used at this engineering pilot plant, which contains harsh caustic chemicals in conjunction with PVDF coated panel walls; an extensive research was conducted to determine which method will be utilized to create a seamless protective film between these two systems.
Numerous industry studies have shown a lack of correlation between outdoor weathering performance in Florida, and performance in common accelerated weathering tests-- particularly when multiple types of resins are being compared. No single accelerated weathering test exists that can predict the outdoor performance for every type of resin in every color.
