Oil storage tanks experienced accelerated corrosion from the soil side. The short term strategy adopted was to drill under the tanks and inject vapor phase corrosion inhibitors to extend the tank floor life in a risk-rated phased effort for the 48 tanks.
Corrosion control systems for the underside steel plates of above-ground storage tanks (ASTs) may not provide adequate protection. Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors (VCIs) reduce corrosion in this area and their effectiveness is presented in this paper.
There are several ways to validate the performance of a cathodic protection (CP) system for buried pipelines. Over the years, pipeline networks and their corrosion challenges have become increasingly complicated, not least due to the many sources of both AC and DC interference that affects CP operation. Also, the various measurement techniques that can be applied to test CP effectiveness has increased over the years. Finally, the sheer number of buried pipeline miles has been constantly increasing.
Corrosion rate monitoring techniques, using coupons and probes of various designs and technologies, have been in use for decades in some form or another. Weight-loss coupons were an early type of direct measurement of metal loss to determine the rate of corrosion in many applications, internal and external. These coupons could be placed where corrosion is suspected to be occurring and the rate of corrosion determined by removing and weighing the coupon after a set period.
Electrical resistance probes monitor mitigation of corrosion. Data will be presented from multiple installations demonstrating the ability of volatile corrosion inhibitors to mitigate corrosion for soil-side bottoms of aboveground storage tanks.
