High-Temperature-Stable Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor for CUI

Corrosion under insulation (CUI) happens due to moisture egress and thermal cycling. Chemical inhibitors can be a relatively low-cost method to mitigate CUI. Inhibitors for CUI that are stable at temperatures below 175°C exist. However, many pipes have thermal cycling at temperatures higher than 175°C. When such high-temperature-operating pipes undergo idling and then experience high temperature operation again, the CUI would be more pronounced because higher temperatures entail higher corrosion rates. It would require inhibitors that are both stable at high temperatures and possess vapor phase inhibition. Presented here is a novel vapor phase corrosion inhibitor that is stable up to 662°F (350°C). The thermal stability, diffusion, and the protection of carbon steel (C1018) against chloride-containing liquid by its vapor deposit will be discussed. This inhibitor is nonflammable. It is USDA-certified biobased, and biodegradable.

A corrosion investigation performed in 2018 on an NPS 6, approximately 4 km long, polyethylene coated pipeline determined that the accelerated corrosion anomalies detected during in-line inspections (ILI) were due to AC corrosion. The AC and DC current densities on the AC coupons adjacent to these anomalies were above the limits recommended in NACE SP21424. It was also determined that the line was cathodically over-protected, and that most of the AC voltage measured on the line was due to 120 Hz AC ripple from a foreign rectifier.

The increasing demand for affordable and environmentally friendly electric energy, accelerates the global plans for offshore wind energy plants. Due to the growing number of wind farm installations, for example, along US coatlines, the need for efficient repair and maintenance of the corrosion protection coatings will significantly increase over time. Many structures are already, locally damaged during their errection. Modern repair solutions have been developed over the last years, in order to keep up with the growing need for maintenance and repair of the atmospheric exposure zones of offshore windfarms. Material and process- efficiency are key in an area where labour and materials are extremely costly. In order to carry out highly efficient and durable repair jobs of the corrosion protection coating systems and therefore to ensure the extended lifetime of offshore wind powerplants, a modern repair coating and procedure has been developed. This paper compares the new single layer, direct to metal coating with the previously used standard products, in terms of corrosion protection performance (according to ISO 203401, ISO 46242, ISO 6272-13 etc.), application methods and complexity, the overall physical-chemical properties and in terms of overall process efficiency. The positive transformation in terms of occupational safety and environmental impact were amongst the central criteria of the project.
